Personal Testimony- Father Oscar-Our Lady of the Pillar
1) What was it like to receive Holy Orders?
*I was very excited. It was the final step in a long process. Reminder that the 1st part of the process is ordination to the deaconate. I was ordained a Deacon in Rome. This was kind of interesting because not all my family could be there for that Mass. There were also some friends there as well. The bishop presiding at the Mass was actually of Japanese ancestry. He came over to our home before the 4 of us were ordained. There were a total of 4 in the Marianist ordination class that year.
2) Was a mass required?
*Holy Order is usually or exclusively administered as part of a Mass. The Mass was a wonderful expression of the cultures of all of us who were involved in the Mass. The main language was Italian but there were parts in Spanish,French, Swahili and Latin. It was also very festive because two of the Mariansts were from Africa and they love to incorporate much song and dance as part of the Mass.
3) What scriptures were read?
*The Diaconate readings were as follows:
First Reading: Jeremiah 1: 4-8
Second Reading: Acts 8:26 – 9:1
Gospel: Matthew 9:35 – 10:1
4) How did it make you feel when you received Holy Orders?
*There was a wonderful sense of awe. I was so excited because this is something that I had been preparing for a long time. Yet it was scary because I understood some of the real responsibilities. For example, the 1st time I heard confessions was a real grace moment.
